Collection of meteorites of the Museum of Natural History of Tatarstan replenished by new exhibit

12 April 2017, Wednesday

Today, the World Day of Aviation and Cosmonautics at the Museum of Natural History of Tatarstan, the Museum-Reserve "Kazan Kremlin", a presentation of the meteorite Seimchan took place.

Its  first exemplar  was found in June 1967 by geologist Philip Mednikov during  field work in the Magadan region. Another expedition to the place of finding the meteorite took place in August 2004. A group of geologists discovered hundreds of new samples  of the Seimchan meteorite, some weighing more than a ton. Specialists have determined that these samples belong not to the common type of iron meteorites, but to the most rare of those occurring on Earth - pallasite, that is, ironstone. Now one of them can be seen by the residents of Kazan. It is a polished plate weighing about 300 grams. On its cut, two components of iron-stone meteorites are clearly visible: nickel-iron and silicates (olivine crystals).

There is also a permanent exposition in the hall where fragments of the famous "Chelyabinsk meteorite" are also presented.
