4 August 2014, Monday

August 5, 2014 (Tuesday). at 17.00, at the cinema "Mir", a pre-press screening of the film of the  competition program of the  X Kazan International Muslim Film Festival to be held. This time, the attention of journalists and members of the cultural community of Tatarstan will be  drawn to  a movie  "Letters from the Past" by Azerbaijani director Oktay Mir Kasim. One of the previous works by Mir Kasim - drama "The Sorcerer" - has been awarded a top prize at Kazan Film Festival, and the director a few years ago took part in the forum as a member of the jury.

The new film   by  Azerbaijani master,  could not wish it better is consistent with the concept of Kazan Film Festival, reflected in its motto "Through the dialogue of cultures - the culture of dialogue." At the heart of the drama "Letters from the Past" (another name for the film  "Die vindicated") - the complex  of relationships   between different nationalities, especially the Azerbaijanis and the Germans.

In Azerbaijan, since the beginning of the XIX century,  tens of thousands of ethnic Germans have been living. The fates of such seemingly different nations for  this  time,  have  "intertwined", like the branches of two trees growing  from  youth side by side. The outbreak of World War II led, as  it is well known, to the mass deportations; they touched also  the Germans  population of Azerbaijan.

We find  the  characters of  the film,  many years after those events. The old German Gunter, cantankerous and uncooperative person, while  a young man, fully experienced the tragedy of exile. These days he is  confined to a wheelchair, can not accept the fact that an early death prevented him from carrying  out  " the two important things": drink a sip of wine from a buried barrel "for luck" at  his native Azerbaijani village,  and pay worthy  tribute to the punishment of  traitor Marcus,  having run  after the  authorities then in 1941.   Gunter sends his grandson Richard   for a long journey to Azerbaijan:  execution of the last will of his grandfather  gives him the right on getting   not a  bad  heritage ...

There is no clear division of people into "black and white"  in the film , no categorical definition of who is right,  and who is wrong ... picture sounds  four languages - German, Azerbaijani, Georgian and Russian. The organizing committee of the festival will show the movie without voice (translation by subtitles) to preserve the unique atmosphere of the film.
