The Winter Book Festival will be available at the designated slot

4 December 2020, Friday

The Winter Book Festival 2020, which this time will be held on December 12 and 13   at the renovated building of the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan (Pushkina, 86), has changed its program. These will touch on all parts of the festival: book fair, lectures, children and families and cultural programs. In addition, the event will include eight special projects.

Entry to the event is available only with free pre-registration with a time reference. If you cannot come to the event at the designated slot - inform the organizers about this by canceling the ticket on the Timepad service or contacting us directly, the organizers note.

One of the distinguishing features of the festival is research events. The  “Smena” first tested this format at the 2018 Summer Book Festival. Then we examined the event itself - the work of the organizers, the routes of visitors through the park, dialogues with booksellers and the behavior of lecturers. The book festival was analyzed through the prism of frame theory and explained whether it is possible to judge the content of what is happening by analyzing only its social form.

This time the organizers decided to focus on researching a broader topic -  reading practices of Kazan citizens. Researchers from the Institute for Cultural Research at the Higher School of Economics (Vitaly Kurennoy, Svetlana Barsukova, Ivan Nepreyenko, Alexander Suvalko) will help us in this.

Vitaly Kurennoy, Director of the Institute for Cultural Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics: “We are in the process of rapid transformations of cultural practices, which were largely stimulated by the events of 2020. Reading is one of the basic skills of a modern person and, without a doubt, one of the significant factors in the anthropology of the modern subject. The study of the Kazan Book Festival is an interesting case in our broader project of analyzing modern changes in reading culture, an excellent opportunity to understand how reading preferences and strategies develop among active readers of Kazan. It is also an interesting experience in terms of integrating urban cultural events and cultural sociological research, the participation of volunteer researchers adds a civic science format to our research. ”

How do citizens of Kazan learn about books and how do they choose them? How have festivals influenced this choice? Is it possible to replace the book with electronic formats and how much should the publication cost? We will try to answer these and many other questions, and present the primary results of the research already during the festival. More detailed conclusions of the researchers will appear within a few weeks after the end of the event.

In order to take part in the study, you need to fill out a questionnaire or take a survey right on the days of the event. Volunteers will help visitors with this, asking them questions right during the festival.

To participate in the research as a volunteer, fill out a short form. Before the study, a team of volunteers will be briefed. It will take place on December 11 at 13:00 at “Smena”.
