Festival of Polish films "Wisla" started in Kazan

18 September 2020, Friday

The festival of Polish films "Wisla" started in Kazan. Until September 23, residents and guests of the capital of Tatarstan will have a unique opportunity to watch smart European cinema, which is rarely presented in commercial cinemas.

The partner of the Vistula festival in Tatarstan is traditionally the Tatarkino State Budgetary Enterprise. Polish films can be watched at the Mir cinema.

The festival program was opened by Jan Komasa's film "The Body of Christ", which was included in the short-list for the Oscar this year and who lost to "Parasites" Bong Joon Ho just a little bit in the final voting.

On Friday, the public will see the psychological detective story "I am a Murderer", which two years ago became the winner of the competition program of the Wisla festival.

Separately, it should be said about the fantastic film "I'm lying now", which will be shown on Saturday. Its director Pavel Borovski is a graphic artist and an artist by education, so the image   plays a major role here, but it is the script that is the most interesting element of the film, since it skillfully uses observations of complex interpersonal relationships. When all the participants in the "game" not only lie, but also talk about very intimate issues, the line between truth and fiction is blurred.

Fans of intellectual cinema will love the stylish and ironic black and white art house "Pan T", which tells the story of a failure writer living in post-war Warsaw, where everyone is forced to choose between an honest beggarly existence and dastardly cooperation with the security services.

On Sunday, September 20, viewers will be able to see the only pure comedy in the festival's program - "Tax on Love", a funny and touching story of the relationship between a tax inspectorate employee and a hard-core tax evader.

On Tuesday, September 22, the drama "53 Wars" by Eva Bukovskaya will be shown. At first glance, the heroes of the film, Anna and Vitek, seem to be a married couple with no life problems - they have their own apartment, a well-paid job, and they are raising two children. But their lives are far from ideal. Vitek is a war correspondent and spends most days of the year away from home covering armed conflicts, while Anna counts the days until his return. Departure after departure, war after war - to madness. When one day Vitek does not return from a trip, Anna begins to prepare for the worst ...

The festival program will be closed by the documentary film "About animals and people". Special attention should be paid to this picture. It  talks about Antonina and Yana Zhabinsky. Before the war, they ran the Warsaw Zoo, where, during the occupation, they gave shelter to numerous people persecuted by the Nazis, mainly Jews. This film is considered one of the best European documentaries of modern times. Critics note the excellent work of the filmmakers with archival materials, the editing by Jakub Piotk and the music by Martin Masecki.
