4 September 2018, Tuesday

September 7, 2018, at 16:00, at the Museum of Islamic Culture will open the exhibition "Leo Tolstoy and the Islamic World." This exhibition is another project of the Museum-Reserve "Kazan Kremlin", timed to the year of Tolstoy in Tatarstan. It follows an outdoor exhibition "Believe yourself!", Which opens on the eve of the 190th birthday of the great Russian writer. The exhibition "Leo Tolstoy and the Islamic World" is of Tolstoy's interest in Islam and the ideas of contemporary Muslim thinkers, and shows the readers' interest of Russian Muslims in the writer's work.

The exhibition will present pages of Koran and literature on Islamic themes from the collection of the museum - the estate "Yasnaya Polyana." On the margins of these books, comments that the writer left during reading were preserved. Tolstoy's correspondence with his contemporaries - authoritative scholars from Egypt and India shows a deep study by the writer of Islamic doctrine.

Letters and photographs will tell about Tolstoy's meetings with Tatar intellectuals Fatih Karim, Sadri Maksudi, Gaynan Vaisov at the writer's estate in Yasnaya Polyana. Among the extensive correspondence between Tatar intellectuals and Tolstoy, Fatih Amirkhan's letter is especially interesting. The Kazan publicist and writer appeals to the "teacher" for advice. The manuscript from the foundation of the Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan will be presented to the general public for the first time.

Numerous lifetime translations of Lev Tolstoy's stories and tales into the Tatar language, made by Gabdulla Tukay, Mahmud Galiau, Sagit Sounchel and other classics, demonstrate Tolstoy's authority among the Tatar intelligentsia. Among the translations presented at the exhibition by books from the collections of the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan, small books are especially curious - inexpensive pocket editions that appeared in thousands of copies. The Tatar press of Ufa, Orenburg, Samara, Kazan at the beginning of the 20th century acquaints the reader with the works by the "respectable sheikh" Tolstoy. On the pages of magazines and newspapers presented by the Scientific Library of the K (P) FU, Tatar intellectuals write about Tolstoy - the "great thinker", "the pride of all mankind". So, Gayaz Iskhaki in 1906 appeals to the reader with the words: "Tolstoy's works are so great that only for the sake of acquaintance with his works is it necessary to learn Russian."

The exhibition will acquaint the citizens of Kazan and guests of the city with two glances. On the one hand, with Tolstoy's searching glance, who knew Islamic doctrine well and highly valued its moral principles. On the other hand - with a respectful look of Muslim scholars and Tatar intellectuals of the turn of the XIX - XX centuries, who highly valued the genius of Leo Tolstoy.
