"Torama"
The Folklore Ensemble "Torama" was founded in 1990 by Vladimir Romashkin (1951-2002). The idea of creating an ensemble was a big wish of Vladimir Ivanovich to recreate the great song heritage of Erza and Moksha, Shoksha and Karatau, which almost had been entirely lost.
Many of the songs from the repertoire of "tori" were written by Vladimir during expeditions to different parts of the former Soviet Union, where Mordvinians live. He managed not only to revive the unique tradition of polyphonic male singing, forgotten tunes of folk instruments, but also to present the culture of Mordva people throughout the world.
Along with Moksha and Erzya polyphonic singing, the ensemble shows ancient customs and rituals. "Torama" is recognized in Mordovia (ensemble was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Mordovia) and in Russia (gold medal winner of the main prize and the All-Russian competition of folk music, "Voice of Russia", 1994).
Torama is widely known throughout the world thanks to continued participation in the concerts in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Poland and England.
