"The Illusionist" received the award of the Netherlands Film Festival, and the critics commenced talking about unusual, original style of Jos Stelling.
The film "Railway man" (1986), based on the novel by Jean-Paul Franssens, tells of a lonely man, who lives at the junction of the railway. When once a lost lady passenger settles by him, his world is crumbling ... "The Flying Dutchman", released in 1995 - another work by Stelling on total loneliness. This theme runs as a leitmotif through all the films of director, not casually J. Stelling says that all his life he is shooting one film.
The film "No trains, no planes ...", filmed in 1999, differs relatively bigger (for Stelling) by number of unwrapped dialogues, although the words do not play a significant role. According to the director, as a whole, in a movie, "talking heads" are inappropriate, because "the movie is closer to music than to literature."
The next film by J. Stelling "Nice boy" appeared on the screen in 2007. The movie has been shot jointly by the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and Ukraine, starring Russian actor Sergei Makovetsky. This collaboration of the director with Russia has not ended. In 2012, J. Stelling produced the film " The Girl and Death", which he named "A bow to Russian literature." The director tried to reflect excruciations of the Russian soul and perpetuate the culture of the XIX century, which, in his opinion, should be a source of pride for Russia. The film starring Sergei Makovetskii, Renata Litvinova, Svetlana Svetlichnaya et al.
