August 2–4, 2013, a VI All-Russian Spassky fair of masters of folk arts and crafts, decorative-applied creativity is held in Yelabuga town. For three days, famous Shishkin ponds have turned into a huge festive playground with fair rows, during the days of fair an All-Russian festival of bell ringing will be held in Yelabuga likewise.
Modern Yelabuga fair revives traditions of old merchant town. Still in XIX century the town was famous for a wide Spassky fair, which attracted traders from 86 towns of Russia. At the time of the fair, the city became a big, colorful and merry fairground, and the fair itself was considered one of the most important town -wide celebration. A festival with a traditional orchestra, bells, carousels, acrobats, jugglers and dancers gave the event a sense of brightness and a kind of holiday.
After the World War II, the Fair ceased to exist, and seemed forever. But in 2008, upon an initiative of Elabuga State Museum Spassky Fair has again been revived and already gained a good reputation among folk artists and guests from different cities, towns and villages of Russia and foreign countries.
