118 years ago, Kazan city scientific-industrial museum - today’s National museum of the Republic Tatarstan opened

118 years  ago,  April   5, in  1895, Kazan city scientific-industrial museum opened its doors for wide public. Today, it is known as National museum of the Republic Tatarstan.

The museum was opened at the initiative of city head  Sergei Victorovich Dyachenko,  with  active support from advanced city public, scientists,  local historians,  maecenas  – N.P. Zagoskin, А.А. Schtukenberg, О.S. Alexandrova –Geins and many others.  Big role   in forming  collection of benefactions  played   local  nobility  Likhachovs. Admiral of Russian fleet  Ivan  Fedorovich  Likhachov  gifted  the city a unique collection of  his  brother  – collector and  scientist  Andrei  Fedorovich  which  counted over  40thousand items and among them  minz –cabinet, picture gallery, library, collection of Bulgar antiquity, arms, china ware and many other.  Today,  the front  of the museum is decorated by two monograms  «АЛ» –initials of Andrei Likhachov.

Opening of public museum  in Kazan  at the end of  Х1Х century  became a  major event in a cultural life of the city. All the following years the museum  preserved and replenished it’s the richest collections, studied and restored museum relics, aspired to be interesting for its visitors.

Presently,  Tatarstan national museum  – one of the largest museums in Russia, there are 900 exhibits in its collection. It lives active life. Here new unique expositions are opened,  interesting museum classes are held for people of different age. It is possible not only   to learn history of local land  in the museum   and  get acquainted  with rarities of the world civilizations  but  to meet with prominent sportsmen, scientists, writers, music collectives, political and public figures, to make interesting travel in depth of centuries with reanimated historic characters.

A charitable action «Day of gifts»    dated   to  Day  of museum birth is traditionally held from  April  1  to 5.

April 5, the museum holds the Day of open doors. Entry is free!
