Address of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan R.N. Minnikhanov on the occasion of the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland

Dear Tatarstan people!

I cordially congratulate you on a wonderful holiday - the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland, celebrated in commemoration of the glorious exploits of the faithful sons and daughters of our multinational Fatherland.

Special respect in Russia has always been enjoyed by people who have distinguished themselves in  military business, who have made a significant contribution to strengthening the security of the country, and having committed courageous acts in the name of independence of the Motherland and freedom of our people. On this day, we pay tribute to our valiant ancestors and honor the living Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of the Russian Federation, Knights of the Order of St. George and the Order of Glory - all those to whom they owe their well-being and life itself.

The symbol of the holiday, revived twelve years ago - on the day of the founding of the Order of St. Great Martyr and Victorious George in 1769 - became a black and orange ribbon, which today is proudly worn on the chests of millions of our compatriots. For a century and a half this ribbon, which was an attribute of the St. George Knights, served as evidence of selfless courage and bravery, and in the military year of 1943 it adorned the Order of Glory, which was awarded to rank and file, sergeants, foremen and representatives of the junior command staff of the heroic Red Army.

In connection with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Order of St. George this year and on the eve of the upcoming 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the celebration of Heroes of the Fatherland Day is filled with special patriotic meaning.

Tatarstan citizens are rightfully proud that many of our compatriots have become full holders of the Order of Glory. Their illustrious names, along with the names of St. George cavaliers - our compatriots, are inscribed in golden letters in the annals of the heroic achievements of the Motherland. I am convinced that all of us, through our creative work and sincere service to the Fatherland, must strengthen the power and defense of our great power in order to be worthy heirs of their immortal exploits.
