July 12, 2018 at 18.00 in the National Art Gallery "Khazine" of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan the last event of the second module of the lecture about the art of the XIX - XXI centuries of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Gallery of Contemporary Art of State Museum of Fine Arts will take place - Alexey Maslyaev's lecture "Russian art at the turn XX - XXI centuries. Russian contemporary art in search of oneself. "
At the heart of the final lecture of the course is the question "Is it possible to talk about Russian contemporary art of the last two decades as a formal artistic phenomenon? Does this period has a whole artistic image, or is it characterized by the clash and conflict of many artistic strategies? "
The lecture will focus on the young generation of Russian authors who appeared on the artistic stage in the late 2000s - early 2010s. Among them are Taus Makhacheva, Yevgeny Antufiev, Valery Chtak, Timofei Radya, Ivan Gorshkov, Ilya Fedotov-Fedorov, Arseniy Zhilyaev, Agency for Singular Research and many others.
Representatives of this generation were faced with a problem when there were not enough previous ways of creative self-determination. Underground existence fueled by disagreement with the authorities, involvement in school or master, loyalty to direction or style - these and other strategies have ceased to be effective, and the young author has found himself, his artistic identity has become quite difficult. But the more interesting it is to observe how authors try to become or be recognizable, and how their strategies and ways of self-determination are correlated with previous scenarios of artistic life.
At the moment, the art space created by them is not sufficiently described, as well as the circumstances in which their creative biographies developed. At the lecture, these circumstances (the art system, influential figures in the cultural sphere, etc.) will be reconstructed from the beginning of the 1990s, when, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the need for finding common grounds for professional artistic activity became acute; further through the glamorous 2000s with their spectacular monumental forms and institutional construction; and then to protest movement of 2010, which are "charged" with the search for new ways of politicization of art embodied in both the collective actions of Pussy Riot, and in the self-supporting practice of the ZIP grouping, and in experiments with the poetic form of the Laboratory of Poetic Actionism.
