The artistic director and director of the Kazan Academic Russian Bolshoi Drama Theater named after V. I. Kachalov, People's Artist of Russia, People's Artist of Tatarstan, a laureate of the State Award of the Republic of Tatarstan named after G.Tukai, a laureate of the Award of the Government of the Russian Federation named after F. Volkov Alexander Slavutsky.
One of the most authoritative theater directors of the country has been conducting successful creative activity for almost half a century and headed theater groups for over 35 years (worked in Chita and Rostov-on-Don).
Since 1994, Alexander Slavutsky - the main director, and since 2007 - artistic director - director of the Kazan Academic Russian Grand Drama Theater named after V. I. Kachalov. During the last ten years, which is rare by present time an example of a successful combination of the administrative and creative management over the company. It was with him that the theater has been given an honorary title "Academic".
"In his work, Slavutsky relies on the traditions of the Vakhtangov school with its entertainment, irony and technical perfection, and at the same time knows how to spell the hall with a story told, to arouse feelings, to make people cry and laugh," wrote the critic N. Kazmina.
"This is a theater that listens and hears its audience, takes into account its interests, does not refuse to experiment and staging serious artistic tasks, gradually educates those who came to the auditorium", emphasizes the critic V. Fedorov.
In the plays of Alexander Slavutsky, the main human line always remains, revealing the best aspects of his nature in man. Clara Tsakhanassyan appears in the "The Visit by the Lady" as a terribly lonely loving woman, Lisa in "The Queen of Spades" in the strength of character and willpower is not inferior to the old Countess, and Maki-Knife in the "Threepenny Opera" is sometimes unusually lyrical. Slavutsky does not limit himself to the framework of one genre and is not afraid of mixing them. The theatrical fantasy "The Queen of Spades" is permeated with the realistic truth of feelings, the melodramatic love story is weaved into the grotesque tragicomedy "The Visit by the Lady", in a subtle psychological "Cherry Orchard" dances at the ball suddenly turn into a surrealistic vision, the Broadway "Fiddler on the Roof" is built on a combination of a bright genre of musical and psychologically scrupulously developed dramatic scenes.
Alexander Slavutsky was the first in Kazan to stage musicals on the stage of the dramatic theater, which are very popular among spectators - "The Fiddler on the Roof" by D. Bock, D. Stein, "The Threepenny Opera" by B. Brecht, K. Weil, "Fatal Eggs" by M. A. Bulgakov. On his initiative, an instrumental group was created in the theater, the choreographer and choirmaster work with the troupe.
For plays on prosaic works A.Ya.Slavutsky himself creates dramatizations - independent dramatic works, fully reflecting the idea, style, philosophy of the author. The high artistic level of the performances allows to keep them in the repertoire for decades, collecting full halls.
Alexander Slavutsky is convinced of the need to continue the best tour traditions of the Russian repertory theater. Only in the last decade his performances were successfully performed in Krasnodar (2007), Yekaterinburg (2008), Ulyanovsk (2009), Chelyabinsk (2011), Yoshkar-Ola (2012), Sochi (2013), Yaroslavl (2013), Surgut (2013 ), Ufa (2014), Cheboksary (2014), Rostov-on-Don (2016). The tour poster annually includes at least seven performances.
The theater is a participant of the International and All-Russian Festivals in Samara (2007, 2013), Helsinki (Finland, 2008), Pazardzhik and Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria, 2009), St. Petersburg (2009), Moscow (2010), Ankara (Turkey, 2010), Tambov (2010), Cherkassy, Kherson, Kiev, Odessa (Ukraine, 2011), Brno (Czech Republic, 2014), Marseille (France, 2015, 2016).

An important merit of Alexander Slavutsky as artistic director of the theater is his purposeful work to form a troupe, which today is an example of a well-coordinated ensemble of vivid individuals of different backgrounds
Serious attention A.Ya.Slavutsky pays for the preparation of creative youth. On his initiative, two actors' courses of RATI (GITIS) were produced at the theater, the graduates of which are currently among the leading actors of the theater, including three honored artists of the Republic of Tatarstan and one People's Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan.
