The ballet “Romeo and Juliet” by S. Prokofiev will be shown on the stage of the Tatar State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after M. Jalil

On January 16, 2021, the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” by S. Prokofiev will be shown at the Tatar State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after M. Jalil. The performance is timed to the 70th anniversary of  artistic director of the theater's ballet troupe, Honored Artist of Russia and the Republic of Tatarstan, Vladimir Alekseevich Yakovlev. The performance starts at 18:00.

 

For more than half a century, Vladimir Yakovlev has served at the Jalil Tatar Opera and Ballet Theater: he joined the Kazan ballet troupe in 1969, immediately after graduating from the Vaganov Leningrad Choreographic School.

For 20 years (1969-1989) V. Yakovlev was the leading soloist of the troupe. He created vivid stage images of the Jester ("Swan Lake"), Isaac Lankedem ("Corsair"), Nurali ("The Fountain of Bakhchisarai"), Benvolio ("Romeo and Juliet"), Jourdain ("Bourgeois in the nobility"), Tsar (" The Little Humpbacked Horse "), Pan (" Walpurgis Night "), Pyotr Leontyevich (" Anyuta "), Shurale in the ballet of the same name by F. Yarullin.

 

Since 1989, Vladimir Alekseevich Yakovlev has been directing the ballet of the theater: he forms the composition of the troupe, determines the repertoire, the composition of the performers, production groups of new performances ... The theater hosts performances in his staging version: The Nutcracker (1999), The Sleeping Beauty (2003), Shurale ”(2000),“ Coppelia ”(2007),“ Don Quixote ”(2015),“ Romeo and Juliet ”(2017).

 

Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular and significant ballets of the 20th century. The premiere of the play in Kazan took place in 1975, directed by Dina Aripova (Braude). Then the production of Romeo and Juliet was staged in 1999 by  choreographer Boris Myagkov. In 2017, at the XXX International Festival of Classical Ballet named after Rudolf Nureyev, the premiere of a new version of the play “Romeo and Juliet” took place: this time the interpretation of Boris Myagkov was supplemented by Vladimir Yakovlev. “We had a need to breathe new life into the performance so that it would correspond to the spirit of the times - in form, dynamics and aesthetics,” the director said ahead of the 2017 premiere.

 

On January 16, in the play "Romeo and Juliet" dedicated to the 70th anniversary of V. A. Yakovlev, the main roles will be performed by: Amanda Gomez (Juliet), Mikhail Timaev (Romeo), Oleg Ivenko (Mercutio), Wagner Carvalho (Paris), Anton Polodyuk (Tybalt), Alessandro Kaggedji (Benvolio). Honored Art Worker of Russia, laureate of the Russian Government Prize, Professor Sergei Korobkov (Moscow) will deliver an opening speech. Conductor - Nurzhan Baibusinov (Kazakhstan).
