The XIII Busygin Readings to be held in Kazan

On December 11, the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan will become the site of the XIII BusyginReadings  ofInternational Scientific and Practical Conference. Along with the main museum of the republic, the organizers of  readings are the Kazan (Volga region) Federal University and the Kazan State Conservatory  after N.G. Zhiganov.

The annual "Busygin Readings" are a major event in the scientific and cultural life of Kazan. The conference is held in memory of E.P. Busygin (1913-2008) - a prominent scientist-ethnographer, professor at Kazan University, Honored Scientist of Russia and Tatarstan, Honorary Member of the Russian Geographical Society.

The program of the XIII Busygin Readings includes speeches by scientists from a number of Russian cities (Kazan, St. Petersburg, Samara, Saransk, Yoshkar-Ola, Ufa, Novosibirsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk), as well as Belarus (Minsk) and Turkmenistan (Ashgabat).

It is supposed to cover the following areas and topics: historical memory and commemorative practices; ethnographers during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period; history of science; ethnographic education; historiography and source studies, ethnographic expeditions; ethnographic museology; and also a relatively new research direction in world anthropology - the anthropology of academic life. By the beginning of the conference, a collection of materials has been  published, which is a popular publication among specialists in the field of ethnography, anthropology, ethnomusicology and other spheres of knowledge.

By tradition, before  start of the conference, a commemorative action will take place in the Arsk necropolis of Kazan - laying flowers at the graves of E.P. Busygin, as well as ethnographers N.I. Vorobiev and N.V. Zorin, a disciple  of E.P. Busygin.

At the opening of the readings, the audience will receive a musical present from the Kazan Conservatory. An excursion to the exposition of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan "History of Tatarstan from ancient times to the present day" will be held for the participants and guests of the conference.

Evgeny Prokopyevich Busygin was a professional musician, played various instruments in a number of Kazan orchestras. According to the memoirs of Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan I.R. Tagirova, musical talents of E.P. Busygin, "who accompanied him throughout his life, became an important help in identifying  common and special in the life of the peoples inhabiting our region."

Based on the intersection of ethnography and musicology, the subject of "Busygin Readings" also includes historical, philological and local history aspects. The topic of the current conference is “Kazan Ethnographic School: Memory of History and Anthropological Turns”. In 2020, the readings are timed to coincide with a number of significant anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Tatar ASSR, the 75th anniversary of the Kazan Conservatory and the 125th anniversary of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan.
