Laureates of the XVI Kazan International Muslim Film Festival

The films-winners of the competition program and holders of special prizes of the XVI Kazan International Muslim Film Festival, held with  support of  President of the Republic of Tatarstan, have been determined.

We remind  that the 2020 festival was held in a closed format. 52 pictures were selected for  competitive shortlist. The members of the international jury decided to reward the following films and filmmakers in the main competitive nominations:

- Grand Prix for "Best Fiction Film" awarded to Wang Jing, director of the film "Changfeng City" (China);

- “Best director of a full-length feature film” - Marina Er Gorbach, Mehmet Bahadyr Er for the film “Omar and We” (Turkey);

- "Best Screenplay for a Full-Length Feature Film" - Gan-Ochir Enebish, scriptwriter for the film "Remember Me" (Mongolia);

- "Best Cinematographer of a Feature Film" - Akshay Indikar, for the film "Space Chronicles" (India);

- "Best Actor in a Feature Film" - Cem Bender, for his role in the film "Omar and Us" (Turkey);

- "Best Actress in a Feature Film" - Elena Susanina (film "Kerosene", Russia) and Meruert Sabbusinova (film "Maryam", Kazakhstan);

- The best short feature film was the Russian film “You Are Here” (directed by Orkhan Abulov, producer Elena Butenko-Raikina);

- The best documentary was named "Progress in the Valley of the Unknowing People" (Germany, director Florian Kunert, producers Florian Kunert, Stefan Gieren, Sarah Schreier).

Separately, the results of the "National Competition" nomination were summed up, in which films made in Tatarstan or co-produced with the republic, as well as films about Tatarstan were selected. Thus, the film "Apipa" directed by Ilshat Rakhimbay was named "Best National Film".

The best national documentary film was the film “Dance in the Corner” by Soltan Sungatullin, the best short film in this category was “Walked, walked and saw” by Elina Kasimova, and the best national film for children was the project “Revision Tales. Archiving ”Sergey Kiatrov.

A special prize "For the dialogue of cultures in the Islamic world", established by the partner of the festival, the Strategic Vision Group "Russia - Islamic World", was awarded to the film "Barefoot Runner" (Kyrgyzstan, director - Mirlan Abdykalykov). In addition, the films "Bus" (Tajikistan, director Abdulkhay Zokirov) and "The Desranes Family" (Burkina Faso, director Apolinne Traore) were awarded with Diplomas of the Strategic Vision Group.

The Prize of the Guild of Historians of Cinema and Film Critics of Russia (“White Elephant”) went to the film “Another Leap” (Italy, Switzerland, Lebanon, directed by Emanuel Gerosa). The film "A Place in the Sun" (Morocco, France, director Karim Aytuna) was awarded with a diploma of the Guild of Cinema Experts and Film Critics of Russia.

The Prize of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan "For humanism in the art of cinema" will be awarded to the film "Forbidden Children" (Russia, director - Evdokia Moskvina).

The prize of the Mayor of Kazan was awarded to the film "The History of One Photo" (Russia, director Salavat Yuzeev).

The jury awarded a special mention to the film "From the height of flight" (Tajikistan, director Akmal Vosidi).

The Audience Choice Award was given to the film "Wolf Yar" (Russia, director Amir Galiaskarov). We remind  that the jury included a screenwriter, laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR and the Uzbek SSR, Honored Art Worker of Russia, Professor of VGIK Odelsha Agishev (chairman of the jury); screenwriter and film critic from Bangladesh, member of the jury of international film festivals, Sadia Khalid; Kazakh actor Farhad Abdraimov; director and screenwriter from Tajikistan, academician of the Eurasian Academy of Cinema, Television and Radio Safarbek Soliev; director, honored art worker of Bashkortostan Bulat Yusupov.

Kazan International Muslim Film Festival has been held in the capital of Tatarstan since 2005. The topics of the forum are universal human spiritual and moral, family values, cultural traditions, ideas of peacemaking, religious tolerance and humanism. The program includes films by Russian and foreign filmmakers that correspond to the theme of the festival, regardless of the confessional and nationality of the authors.

The motto of the festival is “Through the dialogue of cultures to the culture of dialogue”.

The organizers of the festival are the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Council of Muftis of Russia, the Executive Committee of the municipal formation of the city of Kazan, the state budgetary institution of culture of the Republic of Tatarstan "Tatarkino" with the participation of the Regional branch of the "Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation" in the Republic of Tatarstan. The partner of the festival is the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia - Islamic World".

The festival is supported by  President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Nurgalievich Minnikhanov.
