30 March 2018, Friday

From May  10 to 23, 2018, on the stage of the Tatar Academic State Opera and Ballet Theater named after M. Jalil  the  XXXI International Festival of Classical Ballet named after Rudolf Nuriev will be held. The forum is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding dancer (1938-1993).

The program of the festival will consist of performances of classical heritage, as well as national repertoire, and choreographers' performances of the second half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century. The forum of classical dance will open with the premiere of the new ballet production "La Bayadere" to the music of Ludwig Minkus in the choreography of Marius Petipa. The performance is updated visually (scenic artist - Andrey Zlobin, costume designer - Anna Ipatieva), some choreographic additions will be made.

"In the year of the 200th anniversary of Marius Petipa, we are performing a new production of the play" La Bayadère "not by accident," says Vladimir Yakovlev, artistic director of the ballet of M. Jalil Theater. - "La Bayadere" is one of the most preserved (in terms of choreographic text) performances of the great "creator of Russian ballet" Marius Petipa. It is a masterpiece of world choreography, to have in the repertoire that only highly professional troupes can afford. In the play there are "white classics", and characteristic, and grotesque dances; this is a monumental ballet in every sense of the word. Another reason why we are renewing the "La Bayadere" right now is the 80th anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Nuriev. Nureyev danced in the La Bayadère party of the warrior Solor, and at the end of his life, just two or three months before his death, he staged this ballet in Paris, on the Grand Opera stage. This was his last work, which he dreamed of implementing, and during his visit to Kazan in 1992 we also talked about it. "

According to Vladimir Yakovlev, conceptually the program of the current Nureyevsky festival is built according to chronology - from the XIX to the XXI century. At the beginning of the festival, the audience will see a block of performances devoted to the Year of Russian Ballet and the Year of Marius Petipa in Russia - besides La Bayadere (May 10, 11), there will also be Swan Lake (May 12) and Don Quixote (May 14) . On May 13, the audience will see a masterpiece of Soviet national classics - the ballet "Shurale" to the music of Farid Yarullin in the choreography of Leonid Yakobson. To get acquainted in the traditions of the drama can be in the play "Romeo and Juliet" to the music of Sergei Prokofiev (May 20).

A jubilee concert dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Kazan Choreographic School (May 19) will be held within the framework of the festival. Director-director of the concert Alexander Polubentsev will attract to the program the outstanding graduates of different years, performing in theaters of Russia and the world.

Within the framework of the Nuriev Festival-2018 in Kazan, two invited ballet troupes will perform at once: the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater of Boris Eifman and the Moscow Academic Musical Theater named after K.S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko. "The second half of the festival is a selection of impressive performances created by choreographers of the XX and XXI century," comments Vladimir Yakovlev. - We asked our guests to present in Kazan performances by modern choreography, which we have not previously demonstrated. Thus, the program of this festival is a kind of tribute to the genius of Rudolf Nuriev, who brilliantly embodied himself both in classical ballet and in modern directions. "

The theater of Boris Eifman will present in Kazan a performance "Tchaikovsky. PRO et CONTRA "(music by P. Tchaikovsky, choreography by Boris Eifman, stage designer - Zinovy Margolin, costume designers - Olga Shaishmelashvili, Vyacheslav Okunev) - the result of many years of comprehension by the choreographer of the personality and creative world of the great composer. The premiere of the performance took place in 2016.

The Moscow Musical Theater named after K.S.  Stanislavsky and Vl.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko will show in Kazan the works by  outstanding choreographers of the 20th century - Serge Lifar ("Suite in White" by the music of E.Lalo), Jiri Kilian ("Little Death" on music by WA Mozart) and William Forsythe ("The Second Detail" by the music of T. Willems).

Before the festival performances on May 10-14 and May 19-20, lectures will be held at the Rosy Theater Lounge. Leaders of the project "Ballet Talk" - well-known ballet experts and musicologists of Moscow and Kazan - will acquaint spectators with the history of performances, will tell about interesting facts.
