Shigabutdin Mardzhani and his legacy

January 16 at 14.00 in the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan  the exhibition "Shigabutdin Mardzhani and his legacy" will open.

The exhibition will be the first event of the jubilee year dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Tatar religious figure and scholar Shigabutdin Mardzhani, who occupies a special place in the history of Tatar social thought and is the most outstanding figure of the reform movement of the XIX century.

Contemporaries considered him "the largest scholar of the Bulgarian land", "Plato of his era", "Tatar Herodotus." Tatar folk poet G. Tukai called him "champion of free thinking, knowledge and progress, which made the first step towards enlightenment".

A joint exhibition of Kazan's leading scientific institutions that store memorial items, manuscripts and books will make it possible to present the milestones of the biography, the formation of the scientific and theological outlook, the pedagogical activity of Sh. Mardzhani, actualize interest in studying his heritage and the cultural traditions of the Tatar people.

From the collection of the National Museum of RT, the bureau-secretary and the trunk chest, books from the library of Sh. Mardzhani will be represented at the exhibition. The unique exhibits will be his photograph of 1874 and a personal stamp made of rock crystal, made in Istanbul in 1864-1865.

For the first time a wide range of visitors will be presented with documents from the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan, testifying to the service and activities of Sh. Mardzhani in the Starokamennaya Mosque in Kazan and the Kazan Tatar School of Teaching, among them - the metric book for 1863-1903. and other materials.

Manuscripts and lifetime editions of scientific works, including a 2-volume fundamental work on the history of the Tatar people "Mustafad al-ahbar fi ahval Qazan va-Bulgar" ("Information Involved for the History of Kazan and Bulgar") were submitted to the Department of Rare Manuscripts and Books Scientific Library  named after N.I. Lobachevsky K (P) FU and the Archives of the Institute of Language, Literature and Art  named after  G. Ibragimov,    Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan.
